Dr. Shaq

As you may be aware Shaq O'Neil graduated with a doctorate from Barry University, Miami Shores, FL (my Alma mater!) You also may have heard his degree was in "Education" - that's because the Human Resource Development program is in Barry's School of Education . . . any words of advice for Shaq or any new HR professional?!
Shaq studied under Dr. David "Where The Rubber Meets the Road" Kopp - my favorite HRD professor!

In NACE's 2012 Internship & Co-Op Survey Interns rated Social Activities as the top benefit of interning with a organization.

Employers - have you hosted social activities with great success?

‘Girls’ Exposes Dark Side of Unpaid Internships

I heard about this show via LinkedIn - while I have not seen it (you can view it for free via web) it sounds like something most students will benefit from watching . . "When Hannah approaches her boss with her request (turn unpaid internship into paying position), she's let go rather than given what she wants."

Employers do you recommend this to students who are working in unpaid positions? Is there a "right way"? Career Professionals - any stories of this happening?!

Charlie Rose Interns

As I'm sure you are now aware Charlie Rose is being sued by an intern.
This line sums up & might calm all of our internship fears about paid/unpaid internships :
"(Interns) They’re allowed to learn how widgets are made, but
they’re not supposed to make the actual widgets."

Not being from or of the 'media realm' I don't see why this situation matters that it's in media vs. any other industry. The author discusses less-than-stellar-interns with some underlining belief that interns can't be fired. Employers/Career Center Staff - is this accurate?

"To Tweet or Not to Tweet"

Great article from SHRM!
We had a fabulous Grad Assistant (GA) in our office who was all about social media & did a great job! However the bad part about GA's is that they graduate! So who was going to take on the office's Twitter account - you guessed it - me!
I really can't get a handle on it & found this article which gives a great breakdown - thought it would be useful to others who also might be in the dark!
"Still stumped about Twitter? Don’t be"
